A non-profit organization dedicated to protecting waterways in Lee County took pictures of shorelines yesterday, Dec. 2 to show the effect of recent water releases from Lake Okeechobee.

Earlier this week, researchers from the Sanibel – Captiva Conservation Foundation detected a medium level of red tide in the waters around Sanibel. However, it’s not known if the water releases are the cause of the red tide.

The following photos show the extent of dark water discharges and phytoplankton blooms along nearshore Southwest Florida, according to Calusa Waterkeeper.
