Environmental Groups Filed a Lawsuit Against Lake Okeechobee Water Releases
Environmental groups have filed a lawsuit against the Lake Okeechobee water releases.
“Try to bring urgency to the situation with Lake Okeechobee discharges,” said Calusa Waterkeeper John Cassani.
Cassani filed a lawsuit yesterday with the Waterkeeper Alliance and Center for Biological Diversity. They said the Army Corps failed to address human and wildlife concerns in regards to Lake Okeechobee water releases. They are also suing the Department of the Interior, National Marine Fisheries Service, and US Fish and Wildlife.
“It creates a problem with harmful algae blooms it changes the salt content of the estuary in a huge way. It’s so much of an impact that it creates an offshore plum that is affecting wildlife in the Gulf of Mexico. Sea turtles, manatees,” Cassani said.
