Robert Halgrim was in his backyard canal off McGregor Boulevard collecting water from the Caloosahatchee River.

He thinks it has been matted with blue green algae.

Halgrim said, “I’ve had it bad enough back here that you can smell it and it can burn your eyes.”

This year he says its not that bad, but with months of hot days ahead, and more water releases soon to come from Lake Okeechobee he has a feeling things will only get worse.

Halgrim said, “I was on Lake Okeechobee a couple of weeks ago and it was pretty bad then.”

The latest scanned satellite image from NOAA shows more than 380 square miles of blue-green algae sitting on Lake Okeechobee’s surface.

Codty Pierce said, “This looks like it might be a Cyanobacteria bloom of some sort.”

We showed Calusa Waterkeeper Codty Pierce what sits in Halgrim’s canal.

He is almost certain it’s not only blue-green algae. But thinks it came from the freshwater releases from the lake.

“Looks like a result of discharges from the Lake.”
