In 2021, the state ordered Fort Myers to eliminate discharges and improve infrastructure by 2028.

The city has now negotiated a new deadline of 2032.

John Cassani, Calusa Waterkeeper emeritus, expressed his concerns at Shady Oaks Park.

“Fort Myers has had a particular problem with this particular wastewater facility, the central wastewater utility here,” said Cassani. “We’re seeing very high levels of fecal bacteria in Billy’s Creek and Manuel’s branch, just two examples.”

Cassani raised concerns about the health risks and questioned the city’s slow progress.
