A Cape Coral developer has been fined more than $34,000 for removing mangroves without permits on the Seven Islands development, a project that has sparked years of debate among residents.

Jason Pim, a Calusa Waterkeeper volunteer and Cape Coral resident, expressed concerns about the environmental impact of the development.
“Look at the fringe of mangroves there, and think about how much that land can protect us from waves and storm surge. And it is a lot of habitat. So what’s left of those green spots on the map in Cape Coral, there’s not much left, and it is super important to protect what’s left, and for us to be good stewards of it,” Pim said.

Pim also highlighted that other developments in Cape Coral have successfully followed environmental regulations.
“You can build a seawall and protect your property without removing mangroves. It’s pretty straightforward at a spot like Seven Islands, and here at Tarpon Point, where you have more room to work with. This is one example of how we can work with the environment. Development and nature don’t have to be mutually exlusive.” Pim said.
