The City Of Fort Myers is allegedly facing a fine of more than $500,000 for the “repeated discharge of wastewater” into Billy’s Creek and Caloosahatchee River.
Fort Myers Mayor, Kevin Anderson, said that the City will make changes to protect its waterways.
“I’m one who believes we have an obligation to be good stewards of the tax-dollar and so this is not a good way of spending money, paying fine’s,” Anderson said.
Anderson made hefty claims that City Manager, Saeed Kazemi, misled him back in September during a special session. The Fort Myers Mayor said he believed Kazemi had a handle on Waste Management.
John Cassani, of Calusa Waterkeeper, said that this has been an ongoing issue for years and is hoping this fine sparks change.
“It’s time to begin restoring these water quality conditions and getting a handle on the on-going problems,” Cassani said.
